Making smoothies every morning does not make you a smoothie expert.

This was the realization I came to recently while blending together the ingredients of my favorite smoothie for the, like, 80th consecutive day just before I was going to blog about it.

Smoothies have been my latest breakfast kick because sometimes after the gym I’m literally too lazy to chew; however, when I sat down to write about it, I couldn’t help but wonder

  • Is this even healthy?
  • Is it okay to consume this much Greek yogurt in one day?
  • What am I going to tell readers, “Go pick up whatever random protein powder you find sitting on the shelf at Fresh and Easy”?!

I needed help if I was going to continue this liquid breakfast thing. Coincidentally, while struggling with my smoothies, as well as muscle-ups, I came across this photo of fellow Crossfit Blur-goer and Culinary Nutritionist, Jason Sani.

Admittedly, on my bed sits a pink Carebear given to me by a friend and former roommate who swears I have rainbows shooting out of my chest in the same way as the smiley stuffed animal.

Jason is like the love child of a Carebear and Ken doll. At least this was my first impression when we met at Sip Coffee last week so I could learn the proper way to craft a smoothie. He’s the type of person who is so nice you suddenly feel a little like Satan and along with his rainbows came a slew of nutrition knowledge, as well as the perfect smoothie recipe.

Bulletproof Blizzard

The Bulletproof Blizzard includes two of God’s greatest gifts: coffee and chocolate. But totally healthy. I didn’t think that was possible, but thanks to Jason Sani… it is. Here he explains the magical ingredients to my newest morning meal.

Ingredients

  • 6-8oz Cold Brew Coffee
  • 2 Tbsp Coconut oil (liquid)
  • 1 Scoop (serving) Chocolate Pea Protein
  • 2 Tbsp Chia seed
  • 1 Tbsp Maca
  • 1-2 Squirts of Chocolate Stevia
  • Ice

All ingredients have a purpose with a total of less than 6 grams of sugar. The good fat from the coconut oil keeps your body in fat burning mode. The cacao (holy cacao!) is raw chocolate that is loaded with antioxidants and minerals including magnesium that most people are deficient in. The Maca plays a role as an adaptogen that helps your body deal with stress and assists with hormones, especially cortisol.

The Chia seeds are a great source of fiber and help balance out your ratios of omega 3 fats, which help with inflammation. Ultimately substituting more natural sweeteners (like stevia) without sugar will teach your body to adapt to burning more fat rather than relying on the surge of energy that sugar provides.
